Here’s a brief video showing you all you need to know to create your design in string.
Knotshot: Reading the Knotshot Visualization for “Circle+”
The Knotshot App enables the creation of a digital, multicolored macrame pattern for transferring to string; we call it a Knotshot Visualization (KV). The example knots marked with red dots are illustrated below.
Macramé knots are illustrated on the Circle+ KV as they appear in string. The knots in Circle+ are all Macramé Knots tied as Square Knots which can “face” either Right or Left named by the side of knot where the vertical segment is located. Reference: Knotshot Macramé Knots – LF (Left Facing) or RF (Right Facing).
TO TIE: Take a dowel and white string and cut sixteen 40” strings. Make sure they won’t unravel and attach them at their midpoint to the dowel with Lark’s Head Knots. Ref: Other Useful Knots – Lark’s Head Knot
Tie the ends of a length of string about 2 feet long to each end of the dowel to support the piece. Ref: Other Useful Knots – Clove Hitch
The colored strings added to this pattern won’t need more that 12” of string for each segment. The white strings run from top to bottom. Several of them are replaced which means they are pushed to the back of the working surface. They can be used to refill their position when needed, saving a knot.
Knotshot makes it easy and predictable to place color in your work.
Besides illustrating the proper macramé knot, the KV can also easily show which Macramé Replacement Knot (MRK) to use and where:
The key: simply compare the colors of the two middle strings at the top of each knot to those at the bottom of the knot.
Examples: Circle+ KV to string
These illustrations from Circle+ are identified on the KV by red dots
Row 3, Knot 3 shows two white strings entering the knot at the top while strings exiting are white and tan. To replace the right string, use MRK – Right with a tan string.
Row 3, Knot 4 seems complicated with 2 whites in and brown and tan out. Significantly, both the incoming strings are different from the outgoing strings. Use a combination of the MRK – Right and Left we call the MRK – Double Different.
Row 3, Knot 5 shows a change on the left side. Use MRK – Left with a brown string.
Row 5, Knot 5 shows tan and white in and white and tan out. No knot needed, just cross the strings within the knot. Standard Macrame knots – LF Cross
Row 9, Knot 4 shows both strings changing to brown. Use the MRK – Double. Just loop the brown string around both of the white ones to replace them both.
Row 6, Knot 3 shows changes in both strings, so use green on the right and pink on the left with MRK – Right and Left, the MRK – Double Different.
NOTE: The Orientation of the knot – the direction it points, LF or RF – does not change the way the MRK strings are added.
Tying these knots to make something unique is what macramé is all about. Please enjoy. ☺
